"If Ukraine breaks apart, it will trigger a war," warns a senior Russian government official. The FT reports Russia is prepared to fight a war over the Ukrainian territory of Crimea (where the largest ethnic Russian population lives and they have a military base). Conjuring images of the 2008 Russian invasion of Georgia, the official told the FT, "they will lose Crimea first [because] we will go in and protect [it], just as we did in Georgia." The Kremlin regards the Georgian conflict as the biggest stand-off between Russia and the west since the end of the Cold War and it has fed determination in Moscow to push back against what it believes to be western attempts to contain Russia.

The maneuvers will involve some 150,000 troops, 880 tanks, 90 aircraft and 80 navy ships, and are intended to "check the troops' readiness for action in crisis situations that threaten the nation's military security," Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in remarks carried by Russian news agencies.
The move prompted a sharp rebuke from U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who warned Russia against any military intervention in Ukraine.
"Any kind of military intervention that would violate the sovereign territorial integrity of Ukraine would be a huge, a grave mistake," Kerry told reporters in Washington. "The territorial integrity of Ukraine needs to be respected."
In delivering the message, Kerry also announced that the Obama administration was planning $1 billion in loan guarantees for Ukraine and would consider additional direct assistance for the former Soviet republic.

The truth is that tensions between the United States and Russia have been rising for years. This has been a constant theme through the recent Olympic Games.
Someday these tensions may erupt into a real conflict.
Most Americans tend to think of Russia as a “former enemy” that more or less collapsed at the “end of the Cold War” in the early 1990s.
But that is not the reality any longer. Russia has experienced a massive economic resurgence over the past couple of decades, and according to one ranking Russia now actually has a larger economy than Germany does.

“No one should entertain any illusions regarding their chances of asserting military superiority over Russia, we will never allow that to happen….thanks to our military doctrine and advanced weapons.”
Russia is in the process of recruiting hundreds of thousands of new troops, and according to Putin the modernization of the Russian armed forces will go to the next level in 2014…
“In 2014, the armed forces must receive more than 40 most modern intercontinental ballistic missiles, more than 210 airplanes and helicopters, more than 250 units of armored vehicles. Nuclear rocket carriers the Alexander Nevsky and the Vladimir Monomakh will take over the combat watch and six new satellites will reinforce the orbital grouping.”

Putin Orders Military Alert To Defend Ukraine Against Western-Backed Fascists

A grave report prepared by the Ministry of Defense (MoD) and signed by Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu confirms that the Western Military District has been ordered to prepare for “immediate deployment and conflict” to the Crimea oblast of Ukraine after Prime Minister Medvedev warned of threats “to the lives of our citizens” in Ukraine from their newly established and Western-backed fascist government.
In a media release to Interfax, Defense Minister Shoigu further stated: “In accordance with an order from the president of the Russian Federation, forces of the Western Military District were put on alert at 1400 (1000 GMT) today.”
The Western Military District is one of the four operational strategic commands of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and controls the 6th and 20th Guards Armies, formations and units of the Russian Airborne Troops (including the 76th Air Assault Division), and Baltic Fleet coastal defence units under Fleet headquarters in Kaliningrad, as well as the 1st Air and Air Defence Forces Command of the Russian Air Force.
Important to note, and as we had previously reported on, Putin had previously warned the US of his intention to protect the Russian citizens of Ukraine and “stunned” President Obama when he told the American leader that he was prepared to send over 250,000 heavily armed troops into Crimea to protect the sovereignty of its citizens against further US-EU aggression.
